HILLSDALE — A family is homeless after fire destroyed their mobile home in Hillsdale on Sunday.

The family is being assisted by the Red Cross, Hillsdale Fire Chief Richard Briggs said.

The home, at 9151 Route 22, was a total loss, Briggs said.

The cause of the fire was deemed as careless smoking, Briggs said.

At about 12:43 p.m., Columbia County 911 sent Hillsdale Fire Company to the address after an alert neighbor reported there was heavy black smoke coming from the home.

When the first firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were shooting out of the one-story home, Briggs said.

Fire officials immediately requested mutual-aid assistance from neighboring fire companies.

Officials requested interior firefighters, and all available manpower to the scene.

The fire began outside the home, went up a wall and burned into the roof, Briggs said.

Part of the rear of the home collapsed in the blaze.

A site to fill tankers was established in a pond at the Hillsdale Fire Station, about half a mile north of the fire on Route 22.

Route 22 was closed to traffic at the fire scene. Fire Police detoured traffic over Old Route 22.

The family, who was home when the fire broke out, was able to evacuate, with their pets, safely, Briggs said.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters, but a few were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, Briggs said.

New York State Electric and Gas responded to disconnect power to the home.

The fire was declared under control about 2:25 p.m. Crews then began checking the structure to make sure there were no hot spots where it could begin again.

An excavator was brought to the scene to remove the home’s roof, Briggs said.

When Claverack firefighters were released from the fire scene, and were en route back to their firehouse, they spotted a dumpster fire at O’s Hillsdale Diner on Route 22. Crews extinguished the fire, before driving back to Claverack.

Fire companies that assisted Hillsdale at the scene were: Copake, Craryville, Ancram and Claverack.

Egremont Fire Company operated the tanker fill site at the Hillsdale Fire Station. Millerton Fire Company stood-by at the Copake Firehouse.

Also assisting at the scene were Community Rescue Squad, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, state police, and Columbia County Fire Coordinator’s Office.

All fire companies were back in service at 4:01 p.m.
